5 February 1879 — Constantinople
Wednesday. 5th [February 1879]. Stayed in bed till 12 when I got up but did not go out; expected Pss Halim who however did not come. Instructed Jerry in his catechism. We dined alone & then Henry & I went to the Armenian mask ball of wh he is patron at El Dorado. On arriving we were met by the committee & their President Mr Forster & handed into the centre box & all the people in the boxes rose while the band played “God save the Queen.” The theatre was pretty & bright & all the women in the parterre were masked. We recd many visits from the different notabilities & 2 or 3 ladies. We returned home at 12.
