8 February 1879 — Constantinople
Saturday. 8th February [1879]. Henry complained that he had slept badly & was on the sofa all day so I sent for Dr Patterson who prescribed for him but he did not get better all day & he went to bed at 7 oclock. In the afternoon May & I drove out to call on Mme Haider P. who lives at [illegible word] in Mr Ede’s house. She expected us & recd us very civilly—& then called in her sister to be introduced. Her pretty little boys were dressed in Albanian costumes wh suited them admirably– After leaving her we went to call on Mrs Koelle whom we found in & having had a luncheon party in her best cap. She told us Mme Haider’s sister was a widow, & was a Protestant Mme Haider a Catholic. She said that the sister had been with her all the morning crying & asking counsel & “after asking for guidance I gave her the best advice I cd. She went on so long that some ladies I had asked to luncheon arrived & I had made no preparations for them as I wd not disturb my friends outpourings.” From Mrs Koelle’s we went to Mme Adler & found her & her husband at home. Mrs Hönischer called also Mme Marinitch & Miss MacCarthney. There were only Mr L. Gower & Ld G. Montague with Ld Donoughmore at dinner beside May & me. Henry passed a little better night.
