22 July 1879 — Therapia | |
Tuesday. 22nd July [1879]. Copied for Henry for the messenger. Had Turkish lesson. Had the Glee practise—none of the ladies came. Mrs Pusey called. Henry, Alice, B & Ed: went out riding. I played tennis & had some very good games. It was very hot. Mme Fournier called. The Hobarts & Mr Smijth dined with us. In the eveng I sang. Hobart amused us by the acct of his dinner with the Sultan on Sunday. He dined tête à tête & they managed to talk with the help of a couple of dictionaries calling in an ADC when they came to a deadlock. The Sultan asked him why he wd not go to Osman P.’s room to wait to see H.M. to wh he said “Effen O adam hich severim”– It appears that Osman P. is always rude to Hobart & tries to prevent him fm seeing H.M. Then the Sultan asked Hobart why he was late and Hobart said they forgot to send the mouche for him but that at the Arsenal “hepsie eshekler derlir.” | |
