13 September 1879 — En route to Rhodes
Saturday. 13th [September 1879]. Most lovely calm weather, not a breath of wind & not a ripple. We passed innumerable islands. Alice read aloud to me a great deal. Abt 5 we passed by the island of Knidos on wh was to be seen the remains of the great Greek city. We begged Henry to let us go on shore and so he gave orders to stop & lower a boat & we landed– It was a most curious & interesting place; there were enormous ruins of walks, temples & theatres. We scrambled about & got from one side of the island to the other so as to see the old harbour on each side. There were a few Turks who inhabited caves & old tombs & a few Greeks who had come in their boats from the neighbouring isles. An old Turkish hag was very civil—asked us news of Turkey was anxious to know whether Alice & I were men or women—not understanding our costumes. There was a lovely sunset & we had to hasten back to the ship. It was too dark as we steamed away to see well the site of the tomb from whence was taken by M. Newton the famous lion wh now stands in the British Museum. Abt 1.30 we arrived at Rhodes & anchored—but we were all gone to bed.
