3 October 1879 — Beiteddine
Friday. 3rd October [1879]. We had to breakfast at 7.30 in order to be off to return to Aley—& we started in the usual procession with troops & all of us riding including Hill. Rustem P. accompanied us as far as a village called Deir el kaner he said he would have liked to accompany us back to Aley but that it was contrary to the etiquette and that when the Emperor of Austria had paid the Govr of the Lebanon a visit he had not accompanied H.M. further & therefore cd not go further with us. We stopped at the same place to rest & have breakfast where the tents were pitched on our way to Beit ed din & we found the carriages waiting when we got to the high road to Aley. We lunched with the Eldridges & picked up our friend & guide Wassif Effi who did for the honors for us for Midhat P. After lunch we took leave of the Eldridges & drove off to Beyrouth. When we arrived at the Lebanon frontier we found all the authorities of Beyrouth had come out to meet us and they had pitched a tent under the shade of a pine wood & we had to go to it & rest & have lemonades & coffee. Midhat Pasha’s 2 children a boy & girl of 6 & 7 with their English governess Mrs Smith were there Midhat having ordered that they should come out of town to meet us. After resting awhile & taking coffee &c we resumed the march to Beyrouth & went to the Exchange where all the members of the Bourse received Henry & took him over the new building– We ladies were also admitted & given ices—we then went on board the Antelope in the usual solemn state with guards of honor & the Authorities to see us off. We found to our relief that good old Mr Eldridge who had asked to accompany us to Cyprus was not coming but Wassif Effi asked to be allowed to go so we took him. Before dark we sailed for Cyprus.
