4 October 1879 — Larnaka, Cyprus
Thursday. 4th October [1879]. In the morning we found ourselves at Larnaka & in the midst of the Fleet & very soon the Adl Hornby came to call on the Ambr shortly after the Ambr returned the call & thence we landed. We were received by the Commissars, Cobham and a British guard & went to Capt. Cobham’s house. Then we took a walk to see the town wh is really a kind of village & saw some of the churches—the barracks &c & returned to Capt. Cobham’s quarters to lunch. I saw here a prinkah in use for the first time in my life. It was pretty hot weather. Alice & I returned on board the Antelope & rested while Henry went to see some more officials. We dined with the Adl on board the Alexandra in the evening & met all the Commanders of the different ships. While the band played in the evening & we sat on deck Wassif & Mr made Alice dance & then they got me down & I took a turn of the waltz wh is a thing I had not done since I married—then the Adl & I danced in a quadrille—& then we had to make some of the Captains tie handkerchiefs round their arms & do the part of ladies & so spent a merry evening– We took leave of the Admiral & returned on board leaving Wassif Effi with him and the same night we set off for Idalia.
