8 October 1879 — Samos
Wednesday. 8th [October 1879]. We arrived at Samos in the morng & landed. After the usual visits, being received by troops, guard of honor &c we walked to the Governors Kanak. The Prince of Samos Adonides Pasha & his wife & daughters received us & were very polite giving us coffee, sweets &c. They all spoke French. From there we went to the Consulate to visit the Consul & his family & Henry received deputations from the Senate & members of the island. Most of them were in the Greek costume of the Islands wide cloth skirts, gaiters & long red fezes. They made magnificent speeches with congratulations &c & Henry answered them in an appropriate manner & then we returned on board the Antelope & lunched. In the afternoon Mme Adonides & her daughters came & returned my call & brought some friends with her. In the evening we dined at the Governors & had rather a heavy evening tho’ they were all very kind & amiable. As soon as we returned on board we started for Scio.
