17 January 1880 — Constantinople
Saturday. 17th [January 1880]. Up for breakfast. Cut out all the morng. Practiced Requiem with Alice. It snowed all day. Alice went to her classes. Dr Patterson came to see me—ordered me wine & to give up the dieting recommended by Sir H. Thompson. Had a visit from Hobart P. who has just come back from shooting at Izmit having got 250 woodcock in 3 days to his own gun. Practiced singing again & organ while Alice went to choir practice. Sent Jerry, Hill & Florence to the Pantomime. Capt Swaine dined with us at 7.30 & directly after Mme Livadari & Signor Marchesi came & we practiced the Requiem. Mr Washington, Mr Sartoris & Mr & Mme Schlumberger came later & we hammered in at it till midnight.
