30 January 1880 — Constantinople
Friday. 30th January [1880]. Mrs Henry Hanson left about 11 when I had my painting lesson & went on with Alice’s portrait. A warm pleasant day. Walked in the garden. At 5 I received visits. The Heaps called also Mrs Fawcett who came to say how delighted she had been [with] the Armenian ball. Mr Maynard also called & Blacque Bey & I attacked the latter about the poisonous gas they were making in the town he said it was owing to the bad coal & that they were expecting more from England which was probably a lie but we were forced to pretend to believe it. We dined quite alone & went early to bed.
