31 January 1880 — Constantinople
Saturday. 31st [January 1880]. I painted at Alice’s portrait. Tidied up my rooms. Dr Zorab called. Mrs Arthur Hanson came to lunch. It was a very fine day & a thaw. I did not go out—wrote & read. Recd at 5. Had visits from the Hobarts still in a flutter over the Philippine story & Hobart thirsting to “punch some one’s head”. Mr Vincent called & then Mrs J. Calvert & then Lady Thomas & later Misses Pangalo. They came to say the Americans would accept Florence as a pupil at the Home at Scutari & she cd go on Monday. I had an examination of Jerry & Emily for the end of the month wh proved satisfactory. Capt. Swaine, Mr Sartoris & Mr Washington dined & we set to work on the Requiem at 8.30. In the middle of the eveng Ct Corti, Prince Camporeale & Colobiano came in for a short time—but we did not stop our practice. Mme Livadari & Mr Marchese came & sang.
