8 February 1880 — Constantinople
Sunday. 8th February [1880]. I went to church in the morng & came out with a headache at the end of it so that directly after lunch I had to go & lie down in my room. Hill had to leave church & so had young Baker & I was told someone fainted at the eveng service so I suspect there is something wrong with the stove. I got a little better by 5 & was able to dress & go to dine with the Sultan at Yildiz. We started at ¼ to 6 and got there in very good time having to wait about ½ hour. H.M. recd us in his small room & stood talking for a few minutes before he led the way into dinner– I sat on his right & next to me were the 3 young Princes, the 2 oldest dressed as common soldiers & the little one (H.M. nephew) as a sailor—then came Alice. They behaved very well indeed after a preliminary tussle for forks– The watched me to see what I did & followed me very exactly as to use of knife & fork. The Sultan was in very good spirits & eat well & he was very nice & polite as ever– I got a hot water thing put for my feet wh kept me from being quite ill—but I did not feel well. After dinner we 3 & Sir Alfred Sandison, H.M. & Munir Bey sat together & they talked a little on affairs—on the advance of Russians to Merv & our affairs in Afghanistan. It was nearly 11 before H.M. let us go & I was glad to get home, have some tea & get to bed.
