9 February 1880 — Constantinople
Monday. 9th [February 1880]. Capt. Swaine, Mme Livadari & Sr Marchesi came & we had long practice of the Requiem wh took up nearly all the morng. Had a visit from Yacup Khan– After lunch I sat down to my desk to write Blanche a long letter but I only got ½ thro’ it as Mrs Arthur Hanson & Ida d’Ehrenhoff came & then I had a tussle with Jerry who was in a naughty mood & I ended by ordering him to bed– I had a good many visitors, the Bartholeyus, Mr Vincent Montgelas, Radolinsky, Onan, Mr Gatheral & Condourioti– Mr Smijth, Nicolson & Sartoris dined with us & afterwards we dressed the 2 latter for the Hobarts’ ball. Mr Nicolson was quite disguised, Mr Sartoris’ get-up was very good but his height betrayed him. They went off at 11 & we went to bed. We got no English mail as the weather at Varna had been so bad they had not been able to get the mails on board–
