13 February 1880 — Constantinople
Friday. 13th [February 1880]. I had my painting lesson & went on with Alice’s portrait till lunch time– At lunch Henry proposed riding & as Alice did not feel enclined I said I would go so we ordered the horses & started abt 3. We went by the Taksim to the Okmeidan but I was so stiff from my cold I could hardly trot– As we got near the top of the Hill, Henry said he would take a trot but I need not come—& I said Oh yes I will try & off we set—in a few minutes to my horror I beheld Henry’s horse come down with a bang & Henry under him—for a moment I thought he must be crushed as the horse lurched over but managed to get back the other way & got on its legs. I said “Oh James” with my heart in my mouth. James rode up & caught the horse who stood quietly by his fallen rider & Henry sat up looking rather bewildered & in answer to our questions at to whether he was hurt—said he thought not & asked what had happened. I offered to go to a cottage a little way off & to get him some water—but he said he was all right. I begged him to sit still a few minutes wh he did & then James dusted him & Mergian who seemed to have fallen chiefly on his back—his knees not being even touched. Henry then remounted saying he only felt a little pain in his side & we rode home. We met Sir Alfred riding back from Yildiz & Henry talked business with him as he went along. We came in very cold and had tea. Hobart P. called & it was not till after he was gone that Henry began to feel that he had sprained his right wrist—& so I sent to beg Dr Patterson to come. He bound up the wrist & ordered a flannel band round his chest—but no medicines. Henry had rather a bad night with the pain in his hand.
