26 February 1880 — Constantinople
Thursday. 26th [February 1880]. Arthur Burr arrived & was duly installed as Henry’s private secretary. I heard that Mr St John was displeased at Giovanni’s manners, I went to his rooms to try & explain it away but he was convinced that G. was tipsy. After a long discussion & a refutation on my part of the accusation Mr St John told me he wished to warn me as regards Mrs Hobart that he advised me not to let Alice be with her. He had known her at Naples & knew many things against her character & was sure I would not wish Alice to be with her. I was not quite surprised at this as I had an instinctive dislike & distrust of her for some time past—especially since the affair of the Philippine in wh she had not been open about & had told me so many lies about. Walked in the garden in the afternoon with Henry & Arthur & saw one of our chimneys on fire—the men soon went to work to extinguish it & unfortunately Mr Thompson had the brilliant idea of pouring water down the chimney wh brought pails of soot down into the red drawing room & spoilt our carpet. We got it taken up & cleaned & were able to use the room in the eveng as we had a dinner party consisting of M. Fournier & Mlle, the Persian Ambr & his secy.
