27 February 1880 — Constantinople
Friday. 27th February [1880]. I painted in the morng. Mr Washington called. I went out in the chair to pay visits. Found the LaFontaines & Mrs Millingen at home & it was lovely weather. Visits from Mavrogeni & his daughter. He was exceedingly amusing. He told us absurd stories of the cupidity of Mahmoud Damat P. & how he had sent him a letter to give to the Sultan begging to let him return from his exile. Mavrogeni said he had written to the Damat to say that as he M. owed a debt of gratitude to the Damat’s father he would not ask him more than £1000 for delivering the letter—otherwise he wd have asked £10,000. He said that the Damat had not sent the money & the letter was still in his hands. Hobart P. & Mr Ede also called. In the evening dominoes.
