3 March 1880 — Constantinople
Wednesday. 3rd [March 1880]. Had a painting lesson & finished Alice’s portrait. In the afternoon Alice & I went out in the Victoria & drove to Kabatash to call on Mme Kiasim but did not find her at home. Poor Col. Kummerau died of his wounds today. It appears the murderers are fanatic Bosnians but they were all 3 taken. It is thought one of them only fired & the other 2 tried to disarm him as they have both wounds on their hands. The 1st who fired escaped & was pursued & taken after running a great distance & was at last stoned & was much battered abt the head before he was taken. The Washingtons came to see me, also Mrs Smythe & Mme Mantilla. We dined with Corti & met Cagnola, Colobiano & Mr Nicolson. Had a dull eveng & were glad to be home.
