6 April 1880 — Constantinople
Tuesday. 6th [April 1880]. I got Kathleen to sit again & painted away hard till lunch time. In the middle of lunch I turned quite giddy & I had to leave my work & take a turn in the garden & then I was refreshed at 4 oclock I prepared for the rehearsal of the Requiem wh we were going to have Mr St John, Mr Nicolson & I arranged the piano in the ball room & put the chairs in rows & there after tea we sang to a small picked audience of about 15 people. It was much applauded but to our disgust Marchesi the tenor sang badly & put us very much out. We had a little party for Alice, the Mantillas, Mr Harbard, Mrs A. Hanson dined with us. In the eveng the gentlemen of the chancery & the Ehrenhoffs came & we had games being Alice’s last night. Mrs Arthur Hanson stayed the night with us.
