28 April 1880 — Constantinople
Wednesday. 28th [April 1880]. Mrs A. Hanson came to breakfast. I was busy writing & sending out Programmes & tickets for the Concert. After lunch I & Mrs Arthur & Sir Alfred Sandison drove over to Stamboul to see the Refugee workshop wh we have just opened at an orphanage the other side of the Mosque of St Sophia. There were abt 10 women learning to spin wool & to knit socks under the direction of Marie the German woman I had recommended. Coming away we were so hot & thirsty that we stopped to ask the Persian Ambr to give us lemonade. He was in & made us go into the Embassy & gave us cooling drinks—& took us to see his wife & then we returned home & sat in the garden & had T with Mr Foster who called & Ct Collobiano. At 6 Mrs Crawford & Mr Washington came & we directed programmes to all the English with our Compts. Ct & Css Dubsky, M. Maximoff & Mr Sartoris dined with us. In the eveng M. Lucas, Mme Livadari, Hatzfeldt, the Mantillas &c &c came & we had a rehearsal in our Ball room. In the middle of it Mr Sartoris was sent for by Mr Denant who came to say there had been some mistake & he would be very glad to play at the Concert at wh we were delighted. We had some amusing scenes with Css Dubsky who was furious because we wanted her to play a trio she did not approve of—but all was smoothed down & the Concert promised well.
