19 May 1880 — Therapia | |
Wednesday. 19th [May 1880]. Painted in the morng. Mr Foster came to luncheon also Mrs Arthur Hanson. It was fine & hot but a strong S. wind. At 3 the Gregorys went off in the steam launch to go to the French mail wh takes them to Marseilles & when we had seen them off Henry & I sat in the garden. Before we had been there long Mrs Gerard Leigh & Mr Ogle came to call. Mrs Gerard Leigh arrived in her yacht the Chazalie yesterday morng. While she was with us the new Russian Ambr M. Novikoff came to call with Mr Onan. Two more villanous looking countenances I never saw. Novikoff looked vulgar & ill bred—reste à voir– Goschen will be able to judge! We gave them tea & when all had gone we went round the garden with Currie & talked it all over. Henry & I dined quite alone—a very rare thing & played dominoes together. | |
