2 June 1880 — Therapia
Wednesday. [2nd June 1880]. More farewells—Mrs Jolliffe &c. I went up to the stables for the last time with Henry—the hedges on the way up a mass of jasmine & roses & the nightingales singing. We lunched at one. Hatzfeldt & Ittersum & the Mantillas came to see us off. M. Tissot came to pay his official visit to Henry just before we started. He had been here since Monday and all the Corps dip: were furious at his not having called on any of them. Hatzfeldt & he looked daggers at each other. All the servants came out to kiss my hand when we embarked on the Helicon wh we did at 2 o’clock. Mr Goschen came with us as far as Bebek where we were to stop & call on the Persian Ambr. We had to go up towards Buyukdéré to turn & as we passed the Antelope & Falcon on our way down they manned the yards for us at wh we were very much touched. At Bebek Capt. Jolliffe met us in the steam launch & we landed & paid our visit & I managed to scrape a little Turkish to talk to Mohsin Khan’s wife & took a tender farewell of her. Mr Goschen returned to Therapia in the steam launch & we went on to town. We stopped off Top-khaneh till 6 oclock to receive the visits of several English people wh had heard in the morng that we were leaving that day. We had been so uncertain up to last night as to when we shd leave that there was no time to give notice. It had been settled that Henry should present Mr Goschen to the Sultan but so many delays occurred that at last Henry decided to wait no longer as it was unpleasant both for himself & Mr Goschen. We set off at 6 o’clock a lovely eveng with hardly a breath of wind, & we sat on deck & saw the fairy like city fade away gradually into the evening mists.
