Thursday. 1st July [1880]. My 37th birthday. Did not go out all day– Busy writing all the morng. Blogg came again to settle abt my diamond ornaments. Mr & Mrs Clark came to luncheon– Kembles came to tea also Susan Hambro, Monty, Arthur & Mildred, Maria, Connie & Blanche– Kitty promised to come but to our great disappointment never turned up—so we 5 sisters did not meet as we had hoped to do– Charlie Eliot, Ola Du Cane & Bee & Evely Eliot came– In the middle of the entertainment Mrs Phipps called I had not seen her since the day we left Madrid. We dined at the Wolvertons & Mr Marjoribanks sat on my right. Dean Stanley who took me to dinner on my left. Bright was there looking very well—Maria Mss of Actesbury—not a bit changed with her hook nose bower of curls & her deep voice—in a low dress her neck hung with diamonds & emeralds. Lady Hayter—Lord & Ly Grey de Wilton—& Mr Lady Fanny Marjoribanks– Bright left for the house directly after dinner. We went to Lady Tenterdens—met Maria there & a good many F.O. people.
