30 June 1880 — Langham House, Portland Place
Wednesday. 30th [June 1880]. Was in bed all day with a headache. Kembles came to see me & sat with me– Kate came to drive with me but I had to send her alone. At 5 I went to tea at Henry Eliots at Cavendish Square. Met Connie & Blanche & May Ponsonby—the Ian Hamiltons, Lady L. Fortescue & daughter & Mr Nicolson. We dined at home & at 9.30 we went to the Royal Academy stopping to take Susan Hambro with us. We had great fun there. We met the Riaños & went abt with them & then we met Monty. We could not look much at the pictures being so taken up with the costumes of the artistic ladies– Mme Alma Tadema was wonderful—her reddish hair twisted abt untidily—a steel grey satin like a sack on her & evidently no stays! Others wore turbans—all wonderful colours & it was a curious sight. Met a lot of people we knew there.
