29 June 1880 — Langham House, Portland Place
Tuesday. 29th June [1880]. I went with Blanche to consult Dr Duncan & walked with her. After luncheon Henry & I drove to the S. Kensington Museum to meet the Riaños & Sir Philip Owen to see the Indian Exhibition. Then we went to the Rose show at the Horticultural & saw some splendid flowers & then came home & rested till dinner. Dined with Sir Henry & Lady Thompson. One of his octave dinners. There was ourselves, Mr Barton (Director of National Gallery), Mrs John Stanley, Mr Greenwood (late Editor of Pall Mall—now of St James’ Gazette), 2 Miss Thompson & their brother. We had an excellent dinner & one had too many good things– The talk was very general. I sat between Greenwood & Sir Henry. G. was not very agreeable. I thought him conceited & unattractive. He is a little rather stout man with a wide rather bald forehead but with weak mouth. Lady Thompson was very nice. Quite a cripple she was moved by her children & servants. Sir Henry showed us some of Alma Tadema’s pictures some very fine– Henry went home & dressed in his uniform & then we went to the Queen’s Concert. We arrived to the door of the room just as the Royal family marched past in procession & then we got seats quite at the back. Patti, Gerstler, Santley & Nicolini sang—but there was no applauding—& they went on—one piece after the other as tho’ to get it over. Just as it was finished we went & stood in the corridor to see the Royalties come out to the supper room & then we went in for a few minutes & talked to some friends & then went home. Kate came up to town today & came to see me abt 7.
