28 June 1880 — Langham House, Portland Place
Monday. 28th June [1880]. Quiet morng. Ivor & the Bishop of Gibraltar came to luncheon. At 3 I went out in the brougham & fetched Susan Hambro & took her driving. We tried to see several people but all were out except Mrs Hamilton of Craighlaw & Amelia & Warrington Smith. They gave us tea & we visited Mr W. Smith in the dining room where he was making a very woodeny clay bust. I found also Mrs Reeves at home & found her full of the Bradlaugh affair & brimming over with scandal abt him & the new French ambr Challemel Lacour. Had visits from old Fergy & Mr Poynter– Dined with Dow Lady Huntly. Met Mr Stewart, Mr Gore & another young man– Dull dinner– In the eveng Maggie Gordon whistled to us & it was a most wonderful thing—just like a fine flute. We left early to go on to Hamilton House. They had had a dinner party– Found the Powerscourts there. Lady P. told me she was the “wonder of the age.” Having been married 16 or 18 years & having no children she was now on the eve of her confinement.
