27 June 1880 — Langham House, Portland Place
Sunday. 27th June [1880]. Nelly took me out to Mr Ponsonby’s church in Osnaburgh St St Mary Magdalene’s. He preached eloquently but the whole thing was ultra ritualistic. The clergyman who administered the sacrament was dressed in green vestments with red satin trimmings. He kept his back to us most of the time– He incensed & was incensed. He lifted the cup above his head– Every one knelt down during the belief at a certain part– In fact the whole thing was a wonder to me & a bad imitation of the R.C. services. The Salisbury family were at church there & every one stayed for the Communion service even those who did not communicate– We walked home with the Salisburys. Susan Hambro lunched with us. She has just returned to England– We had a long talk, & then she went back to her hotel & Henry & I went off in the carriage to the Chelsea Embankment to call on Sir Robert Collier. He was out but Ly C. recd us tho’ she was on the sofa. Her daughter (married to an Italian) took us to see Sir Robt’s studio. We saw some splendid Swiss mountain views & then we went to Mr J. Collier’s studio in the same house—& saw some portraits of his & some done by his wife. As we were leaving I recognised their butler to be Joseph Hill an old servant of Mama’s who had married Eliza Dean a maid of ours from Canford village– We went to call on Ly Dickson at Claverton St & found her at home & Mr Eyres of Consple calling there. Then I went to see Connie & Henry went to a meeting of the National Gallery. Connie was in & I sat with her in the gardens at the back of their house. Herr Kuhe & Hy Eliot joined us there at tea. I then went & called on Lady Hammond. There I met Sir Rutherford Alcock & had a long talk with him & afterwards alone with Lady H. who poured out her wrath at Lady Strangford. It was nearly 7. when I got home. We dined at home & Susan Hambro came to dinner. Alice went down to Roeton & Nelly was gone to Hampton Ct to see Susans married daughter.
