26 June 1880 — Langham House, Portland Place
Saturday. 26th [June 1880]. I went to 15 Q. Anne St & spent the morng with Blanche trying over songs &c but returned home for luncheon. Mama had invited a good many people to lunch & then had Lady Ashburnham & Lady Mary A. & one of her brothers, Col. Digby– There was a thunderstorm & it became so dark we had to have candles brought to see what we eat. It cleared in the afternoon so I took Nelly with me to the Guard’s party at Albert Grants ci devant house in Kensington. There was a tremendous string to get there & unfortunately it was very showery. However between the storms we got out & walked a good way but I got my feet wet thro’– We found the house already very full—& on the terrace we met Connie but it was too damp to remain out. The house is a very fine one but was unfurnished. One wandered upstairs & down to see it all—& met lots of people one knew. In one room we found tea (on the ground floor). In another we came upon the Spanish students playing before the P. & Pss of Wales & family. We left early & walked a good way to the carriage but were fortunate in getting home at ¼ 7. Rested & then dressed & went to dine at Lord Northbrook’s– A very pleasant party. Lord Enfield took me in to dinner & I sat between him & Lord Northbrook– Met Lady Harcourt-Enfield & Ld & Lady Leigh &c. There was a drum after dinner where we saw a great many friends. We left early to go to the Speaker’s & found there was a great fire raging on the opposite bank of the river—some timber yard on fire– What with the fire & the Speaker’s & Northbrook’s parties there was such a crush we gave up the attempt & returned home.
