27 July 1880 — Motcombe House, nr. Shaftesbury, Dorset
Tuesday. 27th [July 1880]. Had a talk with Merthyr at the door of the garden—& a talk afterwards with Theo in the sitting room & an interview with their baby who is abt 10 months old but did not take to me. We had to start abt 11 for the station. We came to Canford by a 11.45 train. Changed at Templecombe & got to Wimborne at 1.27—& so reached Canford just in time for lunch. Found the party in the garden– Weather lovely. There were the young Dss of Roxborough, Lady Dorothy Neville & a Miss Spencer Churchill (daughter of Ld Alfred). After lunch Henry & I went & sat with Ivor under the umbrella tent on the bowling green—& had a chat. At ¼ 5 he went off in the carriage to meet Pss Frederika & Baron Powell von Ramagen– Henry & I took a stroll in the E. Garden & then went in. By the same train arrived Ld & Ly Breadalbane, Ld & Lady Anson, Mr Heathcote, Mr Sinclair, Mr Humphrey Sturt, Nellie Alderson & Connie– A Sir Henry Meysey Thompson– Mr Heathcote took me to dinner—& Mr Sturt sat on my left– In the eveng Connie played & various people sang– It was very dull– The Pss was amiable. I went & sat with Connie while she undressed to go to bed–
