22 September 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 22nd [September 1880]. The Marquis d’Azeglio came & brought with him a French gentleman M. Ephrussi a great connoisseur in pictures to see our collection—& he was very much pleased– Later came M. & Mme Castellani & they were most enthusiastic over our things. I made Mme Castellani’s acquaintance & liked her very much. She is French & very artistic minded. Henry went out in the afternoon & Hill & I had another field day amongst the books & got them all off the floors into the shelves. Mme Marliani called on me in the middle of it & so I had to leave it. Sir Wm Drake dined with the Castellani’s but we all met on the Piazza later & sat talking till after 10. D’Azeglio was very anxious to hear from me all abt the Shaftesbury family where he had once been so intimate.
