21 September 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 21st September [1880]. We had a message from Sir Wm Drake that he was arrived & that he wd be at the Stabilimento of Venice & Murano at 11 so Henry went off to meet him & I remained at home & arranged things till Henry returned bringing Sir Wm Drake & his adopted daughter—we showed them over the house & made them stay to luncheon. Henry went afterwards with them to Murano & I rested. The Drakes dined with us & in the eveng Henry went with them to the Piazza & I went to bed. When he returned he told me that he had met Azeglio & M & Mme Alessandro Castellani & M. & Mme Rénan. He said Rénan was wonderfully little like what he had imagined him. He was short immensely stout & common looking until he spoke when he had a very agreeable expression.
