3 October 1880 — Mogliano
Sunday. 3rd [October 1880]. Tea in my room. Came down at 10 & read in the garden while the Marcellos all went to mass in the little chapel near the house. Afterwards we instructed Pino & Theresa how to play tennis. Breakfast at 1. Afterwards we all went to Mogliano to see the fair. We saw a donkey race—& men climbing greasy poles & a group of tawdry acrobats with a bear—& all the noise & confusion of a country fair with booths &c. We then returned to the charity lottery & amused ourselves some time buying 10 cs tickets on the chance of gaining 1d match boxes &c. We then returned home abt 4.30 & played tennis again till dark. Count Revedin & Ct Bianchini dined at Mogliano. Dominoes in the eveng & a great deal of music. The Pucci family came & we all sang. When they had just gone Mme Marcello begged the Monsignore to sing something—upon wh he set up chanting a Psalm & from the garden came Pucci’s voice singing the Response– We called him in & then he gave us a most absurd representation or recital– Whenever he paused we were all to say “Bravo” & he to answer “grazie” in the tone he was speaking in—sometimes in a whisper & sometimes in a furious tone– The effect was most ridiculous & he recited very cleverly–
