2 October 1880 — Mogliano
Saturday. 2nd October [1880]. We had tea brought to our room so there was no need to go down stairs before 10. Henry went down to try to play tennis & to teach the Marcello children how to play but the grass was so wet from the dew there was no possibility of playing. We breakfasted at 11. We noticed both today & yesterday that there was meat only for us. The others eat maigre on Fridays and Saturdays. We had excellent frog cutlets & frog soup. Directly after breakfast we started to drive to the Villa of Maser—which had been built for the Barbaro family by Palladio, & decorated by Paul Veronese & the stuccos by Vittoria. Henry & I went in the landau with Css Marcello—Pino drove the pony carriage with Theresa & Massari. We had a prettier drive than yesterday & the Villa is situated at the foot of the hills of Monte Belluna abt 30 miles from Mogliano. We spent some time at the Villa admiring the ceilings &c. Unhappily the present owner Giacomelli has had some of the frescos retouched & has had his own portrait painted in a medallion to match the great people who built the villa– It is now on sale for ½ million of francs & has large estates. When we had been over the villa we went & sat at the door of the little inn of the village & Theresa opened a store of refreshment she had brought with her—we also got excellent coffee—& then returned home reaching a little before 8. We played dominoes & had a little music in the eveng. Pucci brought his two daughters & a pupil. The eldest daughter sang a little & so did I—very unwillingly—but my Spanish song pleased– We got permission to go to bed abt 12– Andreacia keeps very late hours.
