1 October 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 1st October [1880]. We got a telegram from Mme Marcello after we were in bed last night to say she could receive us at Mogliano today so we went off by the 10.15 train only taking Hill with us. Css Marcello met us at the station & drove us to her house. We found Sr Massari still there, a Monsignore, a Tutor, governess & all the children but the eldest. We breakfasted at 12 & directly after we started to drive to Castel Franco– It was a lovely day indeed quite hot– The drive was abt 17 miles along a plain richly cultivated & thro’ villages wh had each a fine campanile– At a place called Trebasilighe we stopped to go into the church where there is a good picture by Andrea de Murano– We observed there were a good many childrens graves quite freshly made & as we came out of the church yard we met the priest & asked him what had happened. He said nothing had happened only 10 or 12 had died within a short time—& he seemed to imply it was a good thing. We left him & drove on. Castel Franco is a pretty little town with a river running right thro’ it & washing the walls of the old castle. One goes in thro’ the castle walls by a splendid gate & one finds a town built inside them. The chief church is there & we went in to see the picture. We met a curious priest who came & talked to us winked & nodded at Mme Marcello & was curious to find out who we were wh she would not tell him. We saw a lovely picture by Giorgione a madonna & child with 2 saints in the foreground—then we took leave of the priest & were taken to see a small house close by wh was called Giorgione’s studio, & was supposed to contain frescos by him. After climbing up a dirty dark stairs we found some horrid daubs on the walls of a bed room & got away as quick as we could. We walked to the outer town & got some coffee at a cafe & then went to see the Inn wh seemed rough but clean. We looked at the statue of Giorgione wh has been lately raised & is put in a picturesque place near the river in some gardens wh go down to the water from the old walls– At ¼ to 6 we started for home—& we reached it at abt ¼ to 9– The dew was falling so heavily that our shawls & hats were quite wet. We dined at 9. Afterwards we played dominoes & then Sr Pucci came a professor of music & we sang & played & went to bed late.
