13 October 1880 — Milan
Wednesday. 13th October [1880]. Henry & I breakfasted before 9 & we went out with the Drakes directly after to the Church of San Maurizio Maggiore a church adorned with an immense quantity of frescos by Borgognone—Luini & his scholars &c &c. We were there a long time waiting for Morelli. We went up into the gallery—& all over the place– It was an old monastery & there is an inner church where the nuns used to join in the service. There are lovely heads of female saints in the ovals in the arches of the gallery of the inner church. In the outer there are lovely frescos by Luini of the History of the Martyrdom of St Catherine– From San Maurizio we went to St Ambrozio & then to Baslini’s. He was there & in ecstasy at seeing Henry—& we went up to his rooms to see the Montagna & the 2 Longhi’s wh Mr Burton had bought for the National Gallery. Sir Wm bought some things & we spent abt an hour. Baslini came & told me of his delight at seeing Henry & touching his forehead said “Ha di questa. E conosciuto per questa– E una gran bellacosa.” We went on to Mme Arrigoni’s but she had nothing we cared about & Ella only bought a modern table. Then we returned to the hotel to lunch– At 2 I went with the Drakes to the Brera & then we were joined by Henry, Morelli & Burton. Enjoyed the pictures especially Bonifazios “Finding of Moses”– Went home & rested till dinner– Went to the Verme theatre to see La Traviata fairly well sung—& a good ballet after– The Drakes went with us but Ella was rather upset by the dying scene & they left before the ballet.
