14 October 1880 — Milan
Thursday. 14th October [1880]. Morelli came to fetch us & after breakfast Henry & he & I went out together we went into the church of St Marco to see the fine old tombs & the finding of the body of St Mark by Tintoretto. There is a wonderful foreshortened copse in it. Went on to the Brera to see M. Cavenaghi but he was not yet arrived so we went into the gallery. Met Mr Burton there & then we went back together to Cavenaghi to see him clean a picture by Sodoma wh we had bought at the Manfrin. It turned out well. Then Henry & I went back to the Hotel to lunch at 12 & at 12.30 we started with the Drakes to drive Post to Pavia. It was a lovely day. There had been a fog in the morng but it had cleared. The road runs between the canal & the tramway. We took 2¼ hours getting to the Certosa. Our driver said he shd have to go back a mile to the inn to rest his horses & promised to be back in 1½ hour. We found a very civil man who took us abt to see the Convent. It is beautifully kept—very clean & nice– We saw some pictures by Borgognone & some by Solari—everywhere there was beautiful inlaid work. When we came out of the Convent there was no carriage to be seen—so we walked on the road hoping to meet it. On we went till at last we got to the inn where we found our man not thinking of putting to his horses. We ordered some coffee—& in the meanwhile we found out that our post boy had ordered his dinner & when he had finished had no money to pay so the landlord had refused to let him go. We had to pay the bill in order to get away & it was nearly 5.30 before we started home. The moon was splendid but the damp rose from the canal & made it very cold & wet. We did not get into the hotel till after 8. Dined– Morelli came to see us. Bed early.
