9 December 1880 — Florence
Thursday. 9th December [1880]. Went out in the morng with Mr Burton to the Or San Michele & saw the Shrine very well. The Sacristan uncovered the Picture of the Madonna & the light was good for seeing the sculptures. Thence we went to the Uffizi to the Room where Botticelli’s Venus is. We went thro some of the other rooms & especially the rooms where are the portraits of the painters & examined them carefully. Returned to lunch early. After lunch Sir James Hudson came & sat smoking & chatting till 2.30 when we had to go out. Henry went to the American Consul’s to see some “rubbish” as R. Brown calls antiquities wh are so often rightly designated by that name. Amongst others there was an altarpiece called Luca della Robbia wh Henry decided was not genuine. We thence went to Spence’s studio & Henry sat for his portrait till it was nearly dark. We were joined there by Mr Burton & left him there when we went back to our hotel. I went to Lady Galloway’s room & sat with her a bit till she went to table d’hôte at 6. At 7 we went to dine with old Mrs Sloane who was quite alone. She begged us to go & stay with her on our return & showed us the appartments she destined us wh had been once entirely furnished for Cardinal Wiseman– At 9 we left her & returned to the Hotel. We found Spence père et fils waiting for us. I left them & Mr Burton with Henry & went to Lady Galloway. I happened to look down on my hand & found I had lost one of the big pearls out of my engagement ring. I at once looked about & then sent Giovanni off to Mrs Sloane’s to look for it; after a while Mrs Sloane’s porter arrived with it. Giovanni in the meanwhile had gone to search in the cab. I took leave of the Galloways as they remain on here & we leave tomorrow for Rome.
