10 December 1880 — Florence
Friday. 10th December [1880]. We got up at 5 & started for Rome by the 10 to 8 train. Old Spence & Mr Colnaghi came to see us off & we got a compartment to ourselves. We had a cold thick fog until we got half way thro’ the journey when it disappeared & got very fine & warm. We got some hot coffee at & reached Rome at ½ past 4 being nearly ¾ hour late. The latter part of the journey thro’ the valley of the Tiber & the Campania was very interesting. We found our rooms at the Hotel d’Allemagne comfortable. I had some tea & then we dined at 6 at the table d’hôte. Lots of English & a gentleman near me insisted on talking to me & took our mutual Friends the Gregory’s as his pretext. Read & played dominos in the eveng.
