11 December 1880 — Rome | |
Saturday. 11th December [1880]. Henry went off in the morng to see Sir A. Paget & only came back to luncheon. I had a headache & did not move all day or take anything so he had to go out again alone in the afternoon & at 6 I went to bed. Maffei & Adl. Cerruti came to see Henry but I did not see them. Henry went to the theatre in the eveng to see La Urban in Saffo. The Queen was there & was immensely applauded & had to come forward & bow abt doz. times. It appears she was walking with one of her ladies when 2 officers & a lady rose up quickly– On suddenly seeing the Queen they pulled up, the lady’s horse slipped & fell. The Q. at once rushed to the horse’s head & held it until the rider could be extricated. No harm having happened to her she remounted declining to be taken home by H.M. in her carriage. This story having been voiced abt the people at the theatre signified their delight by the ovation at the theatre. Henry says that a man who sat behind him in the stalls kept on shouting “Viva la Marguerita.” | |
