13 December 1880 — Rome
Monday. 13th [December 1880]. Got up after breakfast. Made cigarettes all the morng. After luncheon I drove out with Henry. We went to Signor A. Castellani’s house & only stayed a few minutes taking him out with us. He took us to the Botanical gardens to show us the Roman mural decorations wh had been dug out of the bank of the Tiber. Most wonderfully preserved & drawn—they have evidently formed the walls of a lady’s boudoir & there are wonderful stucco ornaments to a vaulted ceiling. Another room was all black with a painted frieze representing different judgements– Some wonderfully well preserved. The burial place was also found intact—the urns still full of bones & the bust of a young woman whose epitaph is on one of the urns– From here we went to St Peters for a little while & then dropping Castellani at home we went & left cards at the Embassy & then returned to the hotel. Ld & Ly Bagot called on us also Senatore Cerruti our old Madrid friend– Monsignor Stonor & Senatore D. Pantaleoni. All separately expressed a wish that Henry might come here in Sir A. Paget’s place– At 7 we went to dine with the Castellanis. Met Sigr Bernardi the Director of the Schavi here—& Guglio Castellani & his handsome young wife. In the eveng we looked at some of Castellani’s splendid collection & Mme C.’s fine stuffs & lace. She has one Venice point flounce wh came from the Jesuits church for wh he paid £200. We came home abt 10.30.
