14 December 1880 — Rome
Tuesday. 14th [December 1880]. Henry went out in the morng to see Cardinal Simeone whom he found at home & also the Armenian Patriarch who has just been made a Cardinal. He then returned to fetch me & we were setting off in an open carriage for the Forum Romanum when we met Morelli who had arrived sooner than we expected. He promised to dine with us in the eveng & then we went on. When we got to the road that runs across the Forum we got out to examine it with our Murray & maps. A great deal has been dug out since we were here in ’69. We walked up thro’ the Arch of Titus & to the Colosseum. We went in & walked about & enjoyed it quietly with our guide book. From there we went to S. Giovanni Laterano & went into the Church—then to the cloisters wh are being covered in with glass– Then to the Baptistery where are fine old columns & some few old Mosaics. We just looked in to the Scala Saneta but had not the luck to see anyone going up on their knees. We returned to the hotel & had some lunch. We took a carriage after lunch & went out to leave some cards & took a turn in the Pineto. It threatened to rain & there were not many people & we did not stay long. Came in & had some tea. Lady Bagot came to see me– Also Ct Maffei & then Morelli arrived to dine with us at 7. In the eveng the Cavalliere Gentile came to see Henry abt repairing our bit of old tapestry. He is like a man on the stage. A little old man with a long nose & squeaky voice dressed in a long coat to his heels—full of obeisances & polite speeches & glory of being a Cavalliere. After he had made an appointment to go to his house on Thursday at 10 A M to examine our tapestry he departed. After Morelli left Henry & I played dominoes.
