15 December 1880 — Rome
Wednesday. 15th December [1880]. Henry & I went out in the morng to the Capitol & spent all the morning looking at the Museum wh is full of things lately discovered—amongst them the remains of an ancient Roman chariot & a seat given by Augusto Castellani & a letter. The ornaments have been put onto new wood & thus they have been able to reconstruct these interesting pieces. We returned to the Hotel to lunch & after walked to the Borghese Palace where we met Morelli & went with him thro the pictures. We sat a long time before the Titian of Celestial & Terrestial Loves. At 3 Giovanni fetched us in a carriage & we went to leave a few cards & then I returned to the Hotel & rested till dressing time. We dined at the Embassy & met Sir James Lacaita who took me to dinner, the Bagot (Ld B sat on my left), Mrs Bruce, the Swedish Minister & Mme Lindstrand, the German Ambr, Mrs Walpole widow of the blind man, the secretaries of the Embassy & one or two other people. Lady Paget looked very handsome as also her daughter. The dinner was good but it was not very lively. After dinner the gentlemen remained in the dining room to smoke. I made acquaintance with Mme Lindstrand & Mrs Bruce– When the gentlemen joined us we went onto the staircase & the German Ambr played the piano & then Mme Lindstrand sang. She has a wonderful voice. We came home very early not having had a very amusing eveng. Cortelazzo arrived.
