16 December 1880 — Rome | |
Thursday. 16th December [1880]. Morelli came before 10 & we walked to Gentiles it was very slippery underfoot being scirocco weather. The tapestry was much admired & is a very fine thing. Morelli says we have found a treasure. It will require a good deal of repair. Made acquaintance with Mme Gentile—a very nice bright eyed little woman who enjoys fine things & went into raptures over our tapestry. We heard that Mr Goschen was to arrive from Naples last night & Henry sent to find out if he shd see him but he had gone out so we gave it up & went off with Cortellazzo & Giovanni to the Vatican. Under the fort of St Angelo we met 2 carriages full of Goschens & the 2 Ambrs got out & spoke to each other. Capt. Swaine was with them & he came & talked to me– Then I got out & went to speak to Mrs Goschen & then we parted & the Goschens go on to London this afternoon. They told us they left Consple. white with snow & had a very bad passage to Brindisi. When we got to the Vatican we were told that there was a ceremony going on & we must wait till 12 so we took Cortellazzo to see St Peters & then at 12 went back to the Sixtine Chapel & Loggia & the Pinacoteca wh took us till past 1 to see. We then returned to the Hotel to lunch. Afterwards we went off to see Augusto Castellani the jeweller brother of Alessandro Castellani. He has a most wonderful collection of ancient jewellery & his reproductions of them. He was very pleased to see Henry & to show him his things. We went to leave cards at the Embassy & then returned to the hotel. Morelli came to see us & sat with us till we went off to dine with M. & Mme Cairoli of the Consulta. Met there Ct Maffei, the Alessandro Castellanis, Sigr Bernabei & several gentlemen whose names I did not catch. I sat between Cairoli & Maffei. The former struck me as a bon enfant—not very clever but goodnatured & the tool of others. His wife is lively rather nice looking & stout. After dinner she showed me the reception rooms some of wh are wonderful with yellow satins & others with blue satin. We returned home at 10.30. | |
