23 December 1880 — Naples
Thursday. 23rd December [1880]. Wrote letters in the morng. Lunched at 11 & went off to the Museum to meet the Castellanis. We went to see the Pompeian glass—bronzes & Greek vases—then Mme Casti & I went off shopping together which was rather a long affair as so much time was taken up bargaining &c. I was tired & glad to get home, get some tea & rest & at 6.15 we went to the Hotel Royal des Etrangers to dine with the Castellanis in the big hall there wh is decorated in the Arabic style. We dined at a side table during table d’hôte & had an excellent dinner. After dinner we all (Cortelazzo was also of the party) went for a walk up the Toledo to see the fish market wh was a very curious sight. The poor were buying fish for tomorrow’s vigil– We walked on to the Mercato where the cooked provisions were sold & where there was a most animated scene & at last we found ourselves close to the port & we got an open cab & drove back to the hotel.
