24 December 1880 — Naples
Friday. 24th December [1880]. Wrote letters in the morng & lunched at 12. Then set out in a carriage for the Museum—being Christmas Eve we found it closed and so we went to the station to enquire abt my box from Paris wh we had heard was in Rome. As we drove up the Toledo there was such a crowd of carriages & foot passengers that we cd not go out of a foot’s pace. On each side on the pavement were booths & stalls & it was quite like a fair. All the great & little world that cd get a vehicle were on wheels. It was a very amusing sight. We drove afterwards to the Chiaia and went into the Aquarium where there is a wonderful collection of marine animals. Enormous crabs & gigantic lobsters & many other things we had never seen before. It is said to be the best aquarium existing. We dined at the table d’hôte– Afterwards we had a visit from a Mr Franks who is staying at the hotel. We fancied he must have been at the table d’hôte & we were speculating wh of the men who dined was him. To our surprise the door opened on a little dwarfed deformed pale man. He had known my sister Constance Eliot. He said he was staying here for his health—& he seemed to have a terrible cough & must be consumptive. He was agreeable. After he left us we played dominos. Dreadful noise all night with squibs in the streets.
