25 December 1880 — Naples
Saturday. 25th [December 1880]. Christmas Day. Henry & I went to the service at the English Church– A very nice service, good music & not High Church. We left before the sermon. Lunched on our return & then went out to call on Lady Holland. Found her at home & the de Bülows staying with her. She lives in the Palazzo Rovella a charming appartment on the first floor. She was in a little boudoir opening on a terrace & gardens bright with roses, margueritas & orange trees all in flower. Her bed stood in an alcove in the old fashion style. She was most kind & hospitable & begged us to come often to see her. She is still wonderfully good looking & her hair has not got the least grey. Her manners are charming. There was a shower while we sat there & when we left it had got fine again. We went for a drive thro’ the Virgils Tomb Grotto & out into the country. At a village on the other side of the Grotto we came upon a party of people pelting each other with crackers & squibs from the balconies of the houses to the street. We had to go thro’ the middle of it & luckily got thro’ without any hurt or the horses being frightened. We returned to Naples by the new Pausilippo road past the new villas wh have been built in every direction. As we came in we met the fashionable world going out to drive. We dined at the table d’hôte. The noise of the squibs continued most of the night & we were much exasperated by it. In afternoon had visit from M. Wagner Russian secy when we were at Madrid.
