26 December 1880 — Naples
Sunday. 26th December [1880]. I was not very well & did not go to church, stayed at home & wrote letters. Hill was laid up with a bad cold so I put her to bed & doctored her with arrowroot & nitre. Henry & I went out to take a walk in the garden & sat there to hear the band play & to see the smart people. We came home rather tired & found the climb up to our 3rd story very trying. Dined at the table d’hôte & had to climb up again afterwards. Dressed & we went to Lady Holland & spent a very pleasant eveng at her house. Made acquaintance with Mme Weisweiller’s sister Css de Monfort Laurito & also the Dss Satriano who spoke English perfectly. She said she had met Henry here in former days. Made also acquaintance of Dss née Lady Dorothy Walpole. She was got up very absurdly with her fair hair entirely powdered—but she was very civil to me. Signor Capriano & Principe de Castagneto were also introduced. Abt 10.30 we took our departure– Lady Holland insisted on following us out & as usual full of kind words.
