28 December 1880 — Naples
Tuesday. 28th December [1880]. In the afternoon we took a carriage & drove to the Convent of S. Martino taking Cortelazzo & Giovanni with us. Altho’ it is only on the hill just above us we had to go a long way round to get there in the carriage & we were abt an hour going up. What pleased me most almost was an old “presepio” of birth of Christ in terra cotta figures—most wonderfully cleverly arranged. The church with its rich marbles does not take my fancy. The cloisters are charmg. We did not get home before 4.30. M. Errera brought his wife to see me. She is quite young & they have only lately married. She seemed very intelligent & talked well. We dined at the table d’hôte. After dinner Sir J. Rose & Mr Morgan sent up their cards & then came up to see us. Mr Morgan is the rich American who lives near Maria at Roehampton & is a venerable looking old man. Sir J. Rose was one time Govr of Canada—both were very agreeable & sat with us chatting & smoked a little while.
