29 December 1880 — Naples
Wednesday. 29th [December 1880]. Wrote letters all the morng & amongst them one for Lady Ely. Henry & I started out walking as far as Lady Holland’s and found her at home & had a pleasant chat—& she begged us to go & dine again with her on Monday. We then went on for a walk & to do a little shopping. Took my ring to the jewelers & on opening it found I had lost the pearl a second time. Then went all up the Toledo in search of a wool shop wh we at last found one quite low down—& had to get a carriage to go home as we were quite tired & the pavement was slippery from the scirocco. We dined at the table d’hôte & then afterwards we went to the Bellini’s theatre & heard the Opera Mignon– It was very well done & the music very pretty & we enjoyed it very much. The theatre is exceedingly pretty—decorated with gold & salmon colour in very good taste. We did not get home till 12.
