30 December 1880 — Naples
Thursday. 30th December [1880]. Made drawings of the glasses I had copied at the museums &c for Venice & Murano Co. & Henry sent them off. At 12 we set out walking to get our lunch at the Café d’Europe. We had oysters, maccaroni, chicken, wine, bread & butter & coffee for 8.90 & very good– We drove from there to the Museum & went to see the Pompeiain bronzes & the wall paintings—which we carefully examined. We saw the new bronze figure of the drunken faun just discovered a wonderfully fine thing with wonderful action—also the bronze figure of a deity seated in a throne also bronze found in a niche of the same house we explored the other day & the lamp which hung in front of it– Then we went upstairs & had a glance at some of the good pictures—but we were too tired to stay long. Giovanni came to meet us with Cortelazzo & we took a carriage, we left Corto at a shop & went to leave some cards & then home. Errera called & arranged that we are to go to Pce Filangieri’s tomorrow at 2.30. We dined at table d’hôte & Sir J. Rose sat next me & he & Mr Morgan came to our room & had their coffee & smoke & some agreeable talk for an hour. I went to bed very early.
