31 December 1880 — Naples
Friday. 31st December 1880. Wrote letters all the morng. Lunched at 12. Abt 3 Henry saw Dr Chiaradia who was recommended to us by Lady Holland as H. had had a sore throat for a long time. At 2 Cortelazzo, Henry & I set forth to walk to Prince Filangieri’s. Signor Errera was at the door waiting for us. We found a wonderful collection of fine things arms, china, enamels fans &c &c The Prince is a middle aged man very polite & intelligent. He received us most kindly & showed us every thing in detail. We stayed there a couple of hours & he gave us tea—then his sister the Dss Ravaschieri came & she was very pleasant & civil and as it came on to pour with rain we had to remain there some little while—& then we came straight home as it was too wet underfoot to walk any more. Mr Morgan sat by me at the table d’hôte & then came & took his coffee in our room. After dinner I dressed & we walked round to Lady Holland’s. There were a few men there. Hot punch was served as a kind of New Year’s Eve drink. Lady Holland was pleasant as usual—she showed me a letter she had had from Mrs Hobart who signs herself Edith, having hitherto been Kathleen. We were at home abt 11 & saw the new year in together.
