1 January 1881 — Naples
Saturday. 1st January 1881. It was a dull rainy day & I did not go out at all– Wrote letters in the morng. Made cigarettes in afternoon with Cortelazzo. Henry went out for a short time to the Nazionale Club but came back saying it bored him as it was full of noisy young Neapolitans. He had a visit from a Prof. Marini who had invented a way of petrifying bodies & he promised to go tomorrow to his house 4 Monte de Dio to see his inventions. In the afternoon I invited poor little Mr Franks to come & see us & we gave him some tea. He was pleased. We dined with Ct & Css Monfort Laurito at the Villa Lydia Parco Griffes– Met Mrs Alfred Montgomery, Marquis & Marchss Imperiale (she is a Russian lady newly married), Prince Cariati, Duke of Belmonte & 2 other gentlemen. I sat between our host & D. of Belmonte. After dinner had a good deal of talk with Mme Imperiale—she seems nice & bien élevée. She said the Neapolitan society was dreadfully corrupt & no woman of fashion dared to be seen driving or walking with her husband. Every fashionable young married woman must have a lover & then she becomes the rage. In fact it seemed to me very like Madrid. It rained hard as we came home & we expect bad weather.
